An Oleophobic coating is a protective coating designed to keep your screen from getting full of fingerprints. Before smartphones were made with these features, they were magnets to fingerprints.
This type of coating is becoming more prevalent on devices designed with glass that people touch frequently. This includes tablets and smartphones.
Most oleophobic coatings are created for devices that are designed to be used with a touchscreen. However, this type of coating won't always work for laptops since the screen doesn't always have to be touched to activate it, and it might affect how the screen feels and looks.
Oleophobic coatings have properties that prevent oil and grease from coming into contact with the screen so they can basically help you to easily wipe greasy fingerprints off of your phones when you use them while enjoying your favorite snacks.
They are more accurate than a surface that rejects liquid such as hydrophobic coating. Hydrophobic coatings are also not a great fit for smartphones since they can affect the feel of a touchscreen.
However, oleophobic coatings can still experience scratches and wear off over time. For iOS devices, this is why Apple advises users not to wipe their screens with alcohol.
Even if you use a microfiber cloth to wipe your screen, the rubbing alcohol will eventually remove the Oleophobic coating. If you want to provide more protection to your phone, you can always apply another layer of screen protectors.
