JAKARTADAILY.ID - PT Butta Toa Smelter on Tuesday held a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of its nickel smelter project in Bantaeng industrial zone in Bantaeng regency, South Sulawesi Province.

The ground-breaking ceremony was led by South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman and Bantaeng Regent Ilham Azikin in Baruga village, Pa'jukukang district of Bantaeng regency.

Regent Ilham said that Butta Toa will invest around Rp 2.3 trillion to develop the smelter project in Bantaeng industrial zone, which is also known as KIBA. The smelter will further expand the nickel industry capacity in the region as several other smelters have also started developments there, according to local news reports.

PT Butta Toa Smelter Director Fu said that his company’s investment in the region will help the local economy by prioritizing the employment of local workers.

“We’re grateful to all sides, especially the local government that has helped us in realizing this project. We’ll prioritize the local workers and help improve their skills through sharing of knowledge. We hope our operation here will help increase the local public welfare,” he said.

Previously, Tony Pahlevi, the president director of PT Bantaeng Sinergi Cemerlang, a region-owned company (BUMD) of South Sulawesi that operates KIBA, said that Butta Toa will develop nickel smelter, stainless steel plant, and metals factory in KIBA.

He said that ground-breaking for the nickel smelter was scheduled to be held in December 2021. “The construction of the nickel smelter will be finalized in 2024.  The construction of the stainless steel plant will take around two years from 2023 to 2025, and then followed by the metals factory that will be completed in 2027.   Total investment for the three projects is around Rp 11.3 trillion,” he said.
