BREAKING NEWS: Jayapura City, Papua, Rocked by a Magnitude 4.7 Tectonic Earthquake

JAKARTADAILY.ID - Papua Province was rocked by a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on Wednesday, 8 February 2023 evening.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the earthquake was in Jayapura City.

BMKG explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 2.50° south latitude (LS), and 140.71° east longitude (BT).

The epicenter of the earthquake was on land at a distance of 4 kilometers northwest of Jayapura City at a depth of 10 kilometers.

"The earthquake (update) had a magnitude of 4.7, on February 8 2023 at 18:35 WIB. The epicenter was on land 4 km northwest of Jayapura City," said the BMKG.

"Feeled (MMI) III - IV Jayapura City, III Jayapura Regency, II - III Keerom Regency," said the BMKG.

MMI II: Vibration felt by several people, light hanging objects swaying.

MMI III: vibrations are felt in the house. Feel the vibration as if there is a truck passing.

BMKG explained, in the first few minutes after the shock, the parameters of the earthquake could change and may not be accurate unless seismologists have re-analyzed it.

Until this news was published, there was no information on damage or casualties due to the earthquake.

Even though there is no potential for a tsunami, the BMKG still urges the public to remain alert to the possibility of aftershocks. ***
