Indonesian Mobile Phone Industry Cuts Down on Imports Thanks to Domestically Sourced Components

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Indonesian Ministry of Industry said that the level of domestic components used in the mobile phone industry is currently on a rising trend. 

Previously, the Ministry of Industry stated that they have been pushing their import substitution program for mobile phone production up to 35 percent. 

Overall the production of mobile phones, handheld computers, and tablet computers is on a rising trend.

In addition to the import substitution program, the Ministry of Industry is also preparing a Commodity Balance for 25 electronic products with the highest import values, including mobile phones and their components.

"Based on the roadmap that has been prepared, the Ministry of Industry targets the assembly of Tablet Computer products to be completely knocked down (CKD) from this year to 2025," said Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Sunday, October 30, 2022.

Another effort that is being encouraged is to create an ecosystem for the casing, battery, antenna, and peripheral industries. The Ministry of Industry sees that there is still a great opportunity to increase the value of Domestic Components through structural deepening.

According to the roadmap prepared by the Ministry of Industry, currently, the battery packing and cable industry is available domestically. This means that these components have been produced domestically.

"We believe, with the help and collaboration of HKT industry stakeholders, we can jointly realize the roadmap," said Agus.
