JAKARTADAILY.ID – Public enthusiasm for travel increased dramatically as the government has finally allowed people to travel during Eid, an Indonesian homecoming tradition otherwise known as mudik.
The Indonesian government previously banned traveling, especially during Eid, due to the pandemic, and now public enthusiasm is soaring through the rough and is reflected in train ticket sales after being denied for two years.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia or KAI in the Operational Area (Daop) 1 of Jakarta revealed that it had sold around 90 percent of train tickets for the homecoming season this year.
Head of Public Relations of PT KAI Daop (operational area) 1 Jakarta Eva Chairunisa said that the peak of the homecoming rush for train passengers is predicted to occur on April 28, 2022.
"The peak of homecoming rush of train passengers departing from Jakarta in this year's Eid al-Fitr is expected [to occur] on April 28, 2022," she said, as quoted by PMJ News on April 19, 2022.
Eva detailed that on average, about 90 percent of train tickets departing from Jakarta to West Java, Central Java, and East Java for the period of April 28, 2022, to May 1, 2022, have been sold.
"The majority of destinations are Yogyakarta, Kutoarjo, Purwokerto, Semarang, Surabaya, Cirebon, Kebumen, and Bandung," he said.
PT KAI has set 20 days of Eid travel period, starting from D-10 to D+10 of Eid al-Fitr, or April 22 to May 13, 2022, during which as many as 743,499 seats have been prepared.
During that period, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta will operate long-distance trains with 58 trips per day and an average seating capacity of 33,652 per day for departures from Gambir and Pasar Senen Station.
In addition, Eva ensured that all the supporting train facilities for the 2022 Eid homecoming travel were in good condition.
She said that KAI had prepared 329 units of facilities consisting of 45 locomotives and 284 passenger trains with luggage.
"All the locomotive and train facilities have gone through various stages of maintenance and special inspections ahead of the Eid al-Fitr travel period," said Eva, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
