PDI Party Responds to Megawati Soekarnoputri Being Reported to the National Commission for Women's Rights

JAKARTADAILY.ID - Secretary General of the PDI Perjuangan DPP (PDIP) Hasto Kristiyanto responded to Megawati Soekarnoputri being reported to the National Commission for Women's Rights, or Komnas Perempuan.

According to reports, Megawati, the General Chairperson of the PDI party, was reported for her comments during a speech at a meeting of the Universal Movement Planning to Prevent Stunting in Jakarta, Thursday, February 16, 2023.

During the meeting, Megawati commented on how nowadays mothers would rather go to Quranic readings, or pengajian.

Prior to the controversial comment, Megawati also spoke about how she was able to purchase a plane, and that women should follow in her footsteps 

Answering journalists' questions regarding this matter, Hasto said that Megawati's statement should be seen and interpreted as a whole.

"You have to look at the general chairman's speech thoroughly. Mrs. Megawati in her remarks, the theme was about stunting, the theme was how to involve mothers in children's education to prepare for disasters, about children's education, about their nutrition, about children's education which must be prepared as well as possible on a family basis to become future leaders. So the basis is the family, not the problem of recitation, that is an important thing to say in your speech, so you said I would also join the recitation," Hasto explained to journalists at the PDIP DPP Party School, Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, Thursday, February 23, 2023.

"So they should look comprehensively at what was conveyed by Mrs. Megawati Soekarnoputri and also look at the themes, that was also conveyed by the Deputy Minister of Religion Mr. Zainut Tauhid who also conveyed very good things after seeing it all," added Hasto.

Hasto said that even Megawati understood that her statement could invite criticism. Therefore, since the beginning, Megawati apologized a thousand times.

However, Megawati kept going forward and dared to talk about issues that were more important than just political interests, namely the matter of the importance of developing Indonesian children and how the role of a mother was very important in it.

"Mrs. Mega's speech was comprehensive. But this is a political year. So that's where Ms. Mega said she was sorry, thousands of apologies. But you gave a portrait of how mothers' attention to stunting has decreased," said Hasto.

"Our proof is that after Mr. Jokowi has made various efforts, we are still 22 percent affected by stunting out of 100 Indonesian children, 22 (people). This is not a short body problem, this is a matter of thought, a matter of intelligence. This threatens the future 24 years to come. This is what we should see,” said Hasto.

According to Hasto, Megawati in her speech last Thursday wanted to remind that the family through the mother is the spearhead in resolving the problems of health and education for children.
