Indonesia's resource-rich Papua has seen tensions rise and simmer for decades, as a low-level struggle for independence has been waged since 1969 when Indonesia declared the island is part of the country, based on territories of the Dutch colonial rule.
Footage from local news showed a scuffle between security and several people gathered outside the police station where Enembe was initially held.
Mahfud MD, an Indonesian politician and lawyer, who is currently serving as the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia, had said he affirms that the probe into Enembe was not politically motivated.
President Joko Widodo, who has enjoyed Enembe's companies during some of his visits to the easternmost island of the country, had said the KPK "must already have their evidence".
He affirmed that "everybody is the same in the eyes of the law."
In September 2022, Mahfud MD had made comments that Lukas Enembe was allegedly involved in mismanaging funds and laundering "hundreds of billions" of rupiah, citing analyses from the state’s Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, locally known as PPATK.
Enembe also denies this allegation.
