BNPB: 1,979 People Displaced in the Aftermath of Mount Semeru Eruption, No Fatalities Recorded

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that at least 1,979 people were displaced by the volcanic activity of Mount Semeru on Sunday, December 4, 2022.

People from 11 locations had to be evacuated after the mountain started spewing hot clouds.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status of Mount Semeru from level III (caution) to level IV (alert).

The Center for Control and Operations of the BNPB detailed the 11 evacuation points as follows; 266 people in SDN 4 Supiturang, 217 people in the Oro-oro Ombo Village Hall, and 119 people in SDN 2 Sumberurip.

Then there were 228 people at the Sumberurip Village Hall, 131 people at the Penanggal Village Hall, 52 people at the Gunung Sawur Post, 216 people at the Pasirian Village Hall, 150 people at Candipuro Field, 600 people at the Candipuro District Office and the rest at SMP N 2 Pronojiwo.

Meanwhile, the areas affected by the volcanic clouds from Semeru include Capiturang and Sumberurip Villages in Pronojiwo District, Sumbersari Village in Rowokangkung District, Penanggal Village and Sumberwuluh Village in Candipuro District and Pasirian Village in Pasirian Village.

BNPB said there had been no reports of casualties. The joint team from BPBD Lumajang Regency, National Search and Rescue Agency, TNI, Polri, volunteers, and relevant cross agencies continued to make the rescue, search, and evacuation efforts.

A total of 10,000 cloth masks, 10,000 medical masks, and 4,000 children's masks have been distributed to reduce the impact of respiratory health risks due to volcanic ash.

Meanwhile, PMI and the Social Service are in the process of establishing a public kitchen.

With this increase in volcanic activity, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Semeru from 'Caution' to 'Alert' or from Level III to Level IV, as of 12.00 AM local time today

In connection with this increase in status, PVMBG recommends the community not to carry out any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, 13 km from the peak.
