JAKARTADAILY.ID – The death toll from a powerful Indonesian earthquake reached 318 as the search for victims continued Saturday, November 26, 2022.

Monday’s 5.6 magnitude quake, which was centered in the Cianjur regency of Indonesia's West Java province, injured thousands of people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes.

Mayor General Fajar Setiawan, Deputy for Emergency Response of The National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), said the evacuation team found eight more bodies on Saturday afternoon, adding the total dead toll to 318 people.

He added 7,729 people were injured, 595 people had serious injuries and 7,134 people suffered minor injuries due to the earthquake.

Many of the victims were reportedly children, including the 20 killed in a collapsed school.

There was a story from search and rescue team who spent all day searching for a 7-year-old in one hard-hit area, tragically the person found her body Friday morning under three layers of concrete.

Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia, but the latest earthquake hit a densely populated area, which led to severe damage and high casualties, experts said.
