JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the public about secondary disasters such as landslides and flash floods after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Cianjur, West Java.
The warning was made as the soil in the hillsides and valleys of the Cianjur area might have been loosened by the recent earthquake, furthermore, heavy rain might also increase the chances of landslides.
"The community and local government also need to be aware of the collateral hazard or follow-up hazard after yesterday's earthquake," added Dwikorita,
On the same occasion, the BMKG also appealed to the public to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
Damaged buildings are likely to have their foundations compromised, and therefore will not be able to maintain their integrity should aftershocks occur.
"Return home if the building is damaged or cracked. As of 06.00 WIB, November 22, 2022, there have been 117 aftershocks with the largest high vibration of 4.2 and the smallest magnitude of 1.5," she added.
