Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Provides Scientific Explanation for the Earthquake

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) sent an Emergency Response Team (TTD) to the location of the earthquake in Cianjur which occurred on November 21, 2022.

The team discovered that the epicenter of the earthquake was located on land in the Cianjur Regency, West Java Province, which has a special regional morphology.

Its characteristics are generally in the form of plains to undulating plains, undulating to steep hills which are located in the southeastern part of the Gede volcano.

Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan stated This area is generally composed of quaternary deposits in the form of young volcanic debris (volcanic breccia, lava, tuff) and river alluvial.

Some of the young volcanic debris has weathered. These quaternary deposits are generally soft, loose, and unconsolidated, and prone to earthquakes.

"Apart from that, the morphology of the hills is wavy to steep, which is composed of rocks that have experienced weathering. There is the potential for ground movements to occur which can be triggered by strong earthquake shocks and high rainfall," explained Hendra in a press release.

Hendra added that based on the position of the epicenter, depth, and sourcing data from BMKG and GFZ Germany, the earthquake in Cianjur was caused by active fault activity.
