Hundreds of Base Transceiver Stations are Inoperative Due to the Cianjur Earthquake

JAKARTADAILY.ID – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 centered in Cianjur Regency, West Java yesterday disrupted various telecommunication facilities in the area.

There are at least 284 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites that have been disrupted due to the cessation of electricity supply.

Acting Director General of Post and Information Technology at the Indonesian Ministry of Communication, Ismail said that until 18:30 Western Indonesia Time, Telkomsel had taken steps to recover 118 BTS sites that had experienced power supply interruptions.

Indosat is currently restoring 10 affected BTS sites in Sukabumi, and 81 BTS sites in Cianjur. While XL Axiata is trying to restore 63 affected BTS sites, Smartfren is also recovering 12 BTS sites.

"In general, cellular telecommunications network services are still quite safe with generator power supply. We and cellular operators are trying to maintain the best capacity and quality of telecommunications services to the public," said Ismail in a press release issued by the government on Monday evening, November 21, 2022.

Previously it was reported that an earthquake had occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers on Monday, November 21, 2022, at 13:21:10 Western Indonesia Time with the epicenter located around Sukabumi - Cianjur, West Java.

This M5.6 magnitude earthquake impacted several telecommunications infrastructures in the region. The Ministry of Communication monitors and encourages cellular operators to carry out mitigation to restore services for the community.
