Earthquake with a 5.6 Magnitude Centered Near Sukabumi Shook Surrounding Areas Including Jakarta

JAKARTADAILY.ID – An earthquake rocked Jakarta on Monday, November 21, 2022. While the quake's epicenter was near Cianjur, West Java, the shocks were felt in areas surrounding it.

According to one report, the earthquake shook a building near Monas and caused the building's iron foundation to creak, and stopped after about 3 minutes.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 and centered around Cianjur, West Java, but the shocks could be felt all the way in Jakarta.

"So what just happened (the earthquake) was positioned around Sukabumi-Cianjur," said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati, Monday, November 21, 2022.

Dwikora was attending a meeting at the House of Representatives building in Senayan South Jakarta when the earthquake happened. She said that everybody exited the building and stayed out for at least 30 minutes for safety.

"The center is in Cianjur, so we were worried, we decided to exit the building first in case of aftershocks," she continued.

Based on the BMKG report, continued Dwikorita, the earthquake occurred at 13.21 West Indonesia Time. The earthquake occurred due to a shear fault and is known to have a depth of 10 km.
