Members of the press are not the only ones mourning his passing. Azyumardi will be remembered by the people in Indonesia as an influential scholar, academic, scholar, book writer and historian.

Azyumardi, who was a journalist at the legendary magazine Panji Masyarakat (1979-1985), ended his career as the number one person in an independent institution formed to protect press freedom and improve the quality of press life based on Law Number 40 of 1999.

Azyumardi has served as Chairman of the Indonesian Press Council since 19 May 2022, replacing Mohammad Nuh.

In 2020, when there was friction that threatened the freedom of religion for Shia and Ahmadiyah citizens in Indonesia, he spoke out loud. In particular, he asked the Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Quomas for the government to confirm the affairs of minorities.

"Especially for those who have been excluded and then there is persecution, that needs affirmation," said Azyumardi at the time.
