Megawati Chats with Erick Thohir in Sarinah, Relieved Her Father's Legacy Remains

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Fifth President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, inspects the Sarinah Building, which has just been renovated by the Ministry of SOEs. The Sarinah building is one of the lighthouse projects of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno who is also the father of Megawati.

Accompanied by the Minister of SOEs, Erick Thohir, Megawati expressed her gratitude that Bung Karno's artistic heritage embedded in the reliefs in Sarinah had been successfully restored.

"Each floor has its own meaning. Especially regarding the re-installation of the relief ornaments. It turned out that after Bung Karno was no longer president, the reliefs seemed to be hidden in quotes. But in the end, Alhamdulillah, they were returned," Megawati told reporters at the Sarinah Building, Monday. June 13, 2022.

When she saw the reliefs left by Bung Karno on the ground floor, Megawati talked for a long time with Erick Thohir. Several times Mega pointed at the relief while talking. Not only that, Mega looked happy when she took a picture with relief containing the story of a farmer named Marhaen.

According to Mega, the reliefs are historical and artistic relics that are very important for Indonesia. Therefore, he is very grateful for the presence of Bung Karno's legacy which can now be enjoyed by the younger generation who visit Sarinah.

"In my opinion, in terms of art, it is extraordinary because maybe young people today may not know. So in terms of meaning, it is extraordinary. Indonesia has artists who are actually maestros," said Megawati.

She admitted that she had come to Sarinah at the same time as fulfilling Erick Thohir's invitation. "I told Mr. Erick that I should see him before President Jokowi was inaugurated in July," said Mega.

On that occasion, Erick Thohir admitted that the Sarinah Restoration was not just a physical restoration. More than that, this is a great mission to restore the history of the nation which has been somewhat forgotten.

"As I conveyed to Mrs. Mega and I have reported to Mr. Jokowi, I think this facility is an almost forgotten history. That's why we asked for permission. Coincidentally, this is a BUMN asset, we can fix it. Don't let this young generation be cut off from history. Hopefully, this can be a reminder of history for the younger generation," said Erick.
