JAKARTADAILY.ID - After two years of prohibition towards the homecoming activity or 'mudik' due to Covid-19, the Indonesian people can finally do the tradition during 2022 Eid Al-Fitr.
The Metro Jaya Regional Police's (Polda Metro Jaya) Head of Public Relations, Grand Commissioner Police Endra Zulpan said that as many as 7 million people have left DKI Jakarta and its cities nearby to travel for Eid homecoming in 2022.
“Approximately seven million people have left Jakarta based on our monitoring," Zulpan said as quoted by NTMC Info Polri on Sunday, May 1, 2022.
Zulpan predicted that the number of homecoming travelers may continue to increase towards the eve of the Eid Al-Fitr. Referring to the prediction, he estimated that as many as 13 million people will also depart for the homecoming trip over the next several days.
"Yes, the prediction is 13 million people [goind on the homecoming travel] for the Jakarta area and its surroundings," he said.
Previously, the National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that the Indonesian National Police were set to secure the grand homecoming activity.
As many as 85 million people were predicted to return home to celebrate Eid 2022 in their hometowns.
"Particularly, it was noted that approximately 23 million travelers will use cars and 17 million ride motorbikes in Java alone," said General Sigit recently.
He also explained that 85 million people would return to other regions of Java to Sumatra, including Jabodetabek (Jakarta-Bogor-Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi), West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Lampung.
Seeing the rising in the number of homecomings, which was much higher than the previous year, the National Police Chief admitted that he was a little worried about the health and safety of the travelers.
"This, of course, can cause vulnerabilities both in terms of health and security," said General Sigit.
For this reason, from a security perspective, the National Police Chief said as many as 144,392 joint personnel from the National Police, Indonesian National Armed Forces, and related stakeholders have been prepared.
Meanwhile, in terms of health, the National Police Chief is concerned about the possibility of a surge of Covid-19 cases as a large number of people have left for homecoming.
