JAKARTADAILY.ID – Jakarta is finally taking steps to build a proper sewer system in the city.

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing are working together with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and assisting the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and preparing the construction of a Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD), otherwise referred to as the Jakarta Sewerage Development Project (JSDP).

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the sanitation problem was not only a matter of the availability of infrastructure but also very much depended on healthy living behavior patterns and maintaining cleanliness.

It is hoped that this development will increase access to sanitation in DKI Jakarta and protect water quality from domestic waste pollution such as bathing, washing, latrines, and other household activities.

"The public's perception of maintaining environmental health is still not a necessity. The practice of open defecation (BABS) also still occurs in several places," said Minister Basuki.

In urban areas such as Jakarta, which has a higher number and density of population than other urban areas, a good sanitation system is needed.

Based on the results of the review of the master plan for the Project for Capacity Development of the Wastewater Sector through the Review of the Master Plan for Wastewater Management in DKI Jakarta in the Republic of Indonesia, in 2012, 15 development zones have been established where the first development priorities to be built by the Ministry of PUPR are Zone 1 and Zone 6. which covers the areas of Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta.
