Before being shot dead by Densus 88, Sunardi reportedly attempted to escape with his car. The suspected terrorist was then said to crash his car into the officers' vehicles and didn't stop after having been given a warning by the officers.
The officers, having considered Sunardi's act to be dangerous, decided to open fire at Sunardi's upper back and lower right hip. The doctor was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.
Dr. Sunardi has been linked for his involvement in a terrorist group, as he is said to be a senior member of the Hilal Ahmar Society Indonesia or HASI and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).
