JAKARTADAILY.ID – Indonesian Minister of Religion, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, has strongly condemned the shooting that took place at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) office in Surabaya.
The incident occurred on May 2, 2023, around 11.24 WIB, and resulted in broken glass at the MUI office. The perpetrator used an airsoft gun, injuring a receptionist and a security guard.
According to Minister Yaqut, acts of violence cannot be justified, whatever the motives and goals. "I strongly condemn every act of violence, including the shooting that took place at the MUI office," he said.
The Minister of Religion also expressed his support for the national police in identifying the perpetrator.

"From the address listed on the KTP, it is known that the perpetrator is a citizen of Lampung Province. Therefore, the police are coordinating with the Lampung Regional Police to identify the identity and biography of the perpetrator. We support the Police to identify the perpetrators," he explained.
Minister Yaqut was in Surabaya to open the 22nd Annual International Conference on Islamic Studies (AICIS) at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya.
The incident has shocked the local community, and the police are conducting an investigation to identify the motive behind the attack. Meanwhile, the injured receptionist and security guard are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
As Minister Yaqut stated, acts of violence are never justifiable, and it is crucial for law enforcement agencies to work diligently to identify and bring to justice those responsible for such acts.
