JAKARTADAILY.ID – As the covid pandemic subsides and countries around the world start to ease travel restrictions, travelers everywhere are gearing up for what some are calling "revenge traveling."

While it sounds somewhat ominous, people have been denied their traveling needs and want to make up for missed opportunities, and Indonesians are no exception, with some eyeing destinations Down Under.

Australia is a top destination for Southeast Asian travelers as it is relatively close to home. A direct flight to Sydney from Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is just 6 hours and 55 minutes.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy and the world's fourth most populous nation is undeniably an important market for the Australian tourism industry. Before the pandemic, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Indonesia is Australia’s eleventh largest source market for international visitation. This data was from December 2019, before the pandemic shut down the tourism industry and significantly impacted the world's economy.

Tourism Australia, a government body, said travelers who are fully vaccinated with two doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved COVID-19 vaccine can travel to Australia quarantine-free, without the need to apply for a travel exemption.

Brent Anderson, Regional General Manager for South and South-East Asia for Tourism Australia said that he believes that travel demand from Indonesia and Southeast Asia to Australia is about to pick up.

"Australia has long been a popular outbound destination for Indonesian travelers, with 74 percent repeat visitation. In this new era of global travel, Australia’s endless opportunities to get out into nature while enjoying cosmopolitan and multicultural city landscapes have never been more precious or desirable," Anderson said in a statement distributed to the Indonesian media on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

Tourism Australia is the Australian Government agency responsible for attracting international visitors to Australia, both for leisure and business events.

"Australia has in store a range of diverse, creative, and sustainable new experiences to entice Indonesian travelers – our numerous tourism operators have continued to innovate and evolve, and this comes to life in our artisanal coffee and restaurant scene as well. For everyone who’s missed Australia, there’s no better time to awaken your sense of wonder and unlock your imagination by taking that trip to Australia now," he said.
