BJP Party Members in India Allegedly Insulted Islamic Prophet Muhammad, Draws Condemnation from Saudi Arabia

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is currently in power in India has been criticized by various Muslim countries in the world.

The criticism was triggered by statements by two members of the BJP who were deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

The statement was made by BJP National Spokesman Nupur Sharma and BJP Delhi Head of Media Operations Naveen Kumar Jindal during a televised debate.

Sharma was reported for insulting the Prophet Muhammad's family. Jindal, meanwhile, is reported to have tweeted about the Prophet Muhammad as harassing.

Kuwait and Qatar summoned the Indian Ambassador and protested the statement by the BJP member, while the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned it.

"This totally unacceptable statement not only deeply hurts the feelings of the Pakistani people, but also billions of Muslims around the world," Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

"The BJP's efforts to clarify and belatedly take disciplinary action against these people cannot relieve the pain and suffering they are causing to the Muslim world," he said.

Qatar urges the Indian government to apologize publicly for the actions of the two BJP members.

"Qatar calls on the Indian government to immediately condemn this statement and publicly apologize to all Muslims around the world," said Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, spokesman for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also spoke out and strongly condemned the statement by the BJP member.

 "The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation expresses its strong condemnation of the recent insults issued by an official in India's ruling party against Prophet Muhammad SAW," the OIC said.

Saudi Arabia also condemned the statement. Considering the words of the BJP members as an insult.
