JAKARTADAILY.ID -- India has been engulfed in a heatwave that has intensified since March 2022. In fact, temperatures in parts of the capital New Delhi have surpassed a record 49 degrees celsius.

It was the second warmest temperature in April 2022 since 1951, with the average monthly maximum temperature reaching 40.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, other northern Indian states, including hilly areas such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh have also recorded temperatures that are above normal levels this season.

According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department, the average maximum temperature in northwestern and central India during April this year was the highest in 122 years.

A deviation of 4.5 to 6.4 degrees from normal temperatures causes heat waves, and more than 6.4 degrees for very severe heat waves.

Environmental expert and scientist, Shakil Ahmad Romshoo said that the hot temperature was the result of global warming.

"With rising temperatures as a result of global warming in South Asia, and consequently higher levels of heat and humidity," he said.

Therefore, he predicts a heat wave that will take place more intensely in India.

"It is anticipated that we will have more intense, longer and frequent heatwaves in India."

On the other hand, Roxy Mathew Koll of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune said that global warming is getting more significant every day.

"Over the last few decades, global warming has increased rapidly, and the sign can be seen from the global weather every day since the 2000s," he said.

"Generation Z never goes a day without feeling the effects of global warming," he continued.
