JAKARTADAILY.ID - China has announced a policy to reduce vehicle and industrial pollution in Beijing and Hebei province to ensure better air quality during the Winter Olympics, South China Morning Post reported Monday.

China is scheduled to open the 2022 Olympic Winter Games from February 4-20. The games will take place in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, both in Hebei province.

Beijing has experienced severe pollution in the last couple of days with concentrations of hazardous airborne particles known as PM2.5 at 205 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday morning

In order to reduce air pollution, the government will close the operation of some high-emissions companies and restrict vehicles during the games. In northern China, meteorological conditions during this period can potentially lead to a buildup in air pollution.

“The Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games coincide with the end of winter and the start of spring in northern China, when weather conditions are extremely unfavorable,” China’s environment ministry spokesperson Liu Youbin said.

“When heavy pollution is predicted, all localities will launch emergency plans,” Liu said on Monday as reported by The Hindustan Times on Monday.

Local governments in Beijing and Hebei have been given authority to adopt administrative steps to limit the operations of heavy polluters and vehicles with large emissions but little economic impact.

Liu also informed that in the event of heavy haze, further emergency responses will be initiated in accordance with the Law on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution.
