JAKARTADAILY.ID - Italian politicians, including President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Mario Draghi, paid respect to European Parliament President David Sassoli who passed away this week, reported by Reuters on Thursday.

Hundreds of Italians lined up in a harsh winter's day to enter the hall where the coffin of Sassoli, who died aged 65 in a cancer clinic in the town of Aviano, was laid out.

"I am here because David Sassoli represents good politics, the human face of Europe," said Rome resident Donatina Persichetti.

According to Sassoli's spokesman Roberto Cuillo, the journalist-turned-president of the European Parliament was first admitted to the hospital in September 2021 after contracting severe pneumonia. In December, he had to be readmitted due to complications related to his immune system.

Sassoli was first elected as a member of the parliament from the center-left Democratic Party and re-elected twice in 2015 and 2019. He had been the president of the 705-seat EU parliament since July 2019, and it was due to end this month.

During his two-and-a-half-year term, Sassoli led the Parliament through a difficult period, including Brexit that fragmented the politics of the continent. He also led the European Parliament through the negotiations over landmark climate legislation and a $2.2 trillion economic fund.

Although the Parliament is considered the least powerful among the three main E.U. institutions, many praised Sassoli for his fighting spirit in keeping the institution relevant and rapidly advancing. As described by Sergey Lagodinsky, a German member of the Parliament, Sassoli “was a person of procedures and a calm stewardship.”

Sassoli's funeral is held in Friday Rome's Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel both expected to attend.
