JAKARTADAILY.ID – Timor-Leste's participation in the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023 in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, was hailed as a historic moment that would have positive impacts on the country's economy and social sectors.
Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Taur Matan Ruak expressed his gratitude for Indonesia's support in their joining as a member of ASEAN, attending the ASEAN Summit for the first time, and becoming a member of a prestigious Southeast Asian level event.
"Thank you to His Excellency Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia, Chair of ASEAN 2023, for his support and commitment so far, for inviting me to participate in this historic summit," said PM Taur Matan Ruak.
Timor-Leste will be listed as the 11th country to join the ASEAN membership, and according to PM Taur, it is an honor for his country to attend the ASEAN Summit for the first time and a new chapter in the history of Timor-Leste as well as ASEAN.

The government of Timor-Leste committed to complying with the follow-up to the Road Map agreed upon jointly with other ASEAN members.
President Joko Widodo congratulated Timor-Leste on joining the new ASEAN family and welcomed the country as a new member of ASEAN.
The first day of the summit saw President Joko Widodo chair five meetings, including the 42nd ASEAN Summit (Opening and Plenary Session), ASEAN Leaders Interface Meeting with Representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Leaders Interface Meeting ASEAN with ASEAN Youth Representatives, ASEAN Leaders Interface Meeting with ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) Representatives, and ASEAN Leaders Interface Meeting with the High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Community's Post-2025 Vision (HLTF-ACV).
The five series of meetings will be closed by President Joko Widodo during the welcoming dinner at Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach.
