JAKARTADAILY.ID – The U20 national teams of Japan and South Korea complete the list of 24 participating countries for the U20 World Cup which will take place in Indonesia from May 20 to June 11, 2023.

The complete list of participants was obtained after Japan defeated Jordan with a score of 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the U20 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan on Sunday, March 12, 2023. At the same time, South Korea won 3-1 over China. So that completes the Asian quota of five countries, namely Uzbekistan, Iraq, Japan, South Korea, and host Indonesia.

Previously, Uzbekistan won 5-4 on penalties against Australia, after a 1-1 draw for 90 minutes. And Iraq defeated its rival Iran with a narrow score of 1-0.

And Indonesia as the host, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir who is also the Minister of BUMN, is insisting on decorating the stadiums that will be used as venues to comply with FIFA standards.

Indonesia itself became the second Southeast Asian country to host, after Malaysia in the 11th edition in 1997. At that time, Argentina came out as champions through a 2-1 win over Uruguay, with Juan Roman Riquelme as its star.

For the Indonesian U20 National Team, this international youth player competition is the second participation after 1979 in Japan. In the second junior World Cup 44 years ago, Bambang Nurdiansyah and his friends joined Group B, along with Argentina, Poland, and Yugoslavia.

But at that time, our young national team could not do anything. In the first match, Indonesia was beaten by Argentina with a score of 0-5, where Diego Armando Maradona scored two goals and brought his country to victory. In the second match, Indonesia was beaten 0-6 by Poland, and in the last match, it was Yugoslavia's turn to beat the Indonesian youth team with a score of 5-0.

With its appearance at the 2023 U20 Asian Cup, where Indonesia joined Group A along with hosts Uzbekistan, Iraq, and Syria, with the results of one win, one draw, and one defeat, there is a lot that needs to be fixed.

Coach Shin Tae Yong must train even harder Ronaldo Kwateh and company. So the U20 national team, aka Garuda Muda, can perform their best in front of their home crowd.
