Indonesian Police Names Owner of CV Samudera Chemical as Suspect in Acute Kidney Failure Case

JAKARTADAILY.ID – The Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) of the National Police named the owner of CV Samudera Chemical as a suspect in the acute kidney failure cases which caused the deaths of hundreds of children

The suspect, initial E, through his company allegedly supplied lethal amounts of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, which were then used to produce the syrup medicines that caused acute kidney failures among children

"We have already conducted a case title to level up to being a suspect," said the Director of Certain Crimes at the Bareskrim Polri, Police Brigadier General Pipit Rismanto as quoted by PMJnews on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

Suspect E and his company CV Samudera Chemical have been simultaneously charged.

"Yes, we will hold the case at the same time as increasing the investigation to immediately determine the suspect," he said.

"The criminal act that occurred has been seen, it has been found by investigators. There are indications that say they (pharmaceutical companies) were bought from there (CV Samudera Chemical). That's clear," he said.

Bareskrim Polri has named two companies, PT Afi Farma and CV Samudera Chemical, as suspects in acute kidney failure cases in Indonesia. The two companies have different but interrelated roles.

PT Afi Farma is a manufacturer of syrup drugs that contain levels of Ethylene Glycol (EG) and Diethylene Glycol (DEG) that exceed the threshold. Meanwhile, CV Samudra Chemical is a supplier of raw materials for PT Afi Farma.

EG and DEG are strongly suspected of being the cause of many deaths in children with kidney failure.

This was stated by the National Police Public Relations through a press release published on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

In the press release, it was revealed that the determination of suspects against the two companies was carried out after the joint team of Bareskrim Polri held a case title on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, as well as examined 41 witnesses.
