China Allegedly Forces Families To Live In Quarantine Camps Ahead Winter Olympics

JAKARTADAILY.ID - Six weeks away from the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese city of Xi’an found itself under total lockdown over a severe COVID outbreak. Dealing with multiple coronavirus outbreaks despite some of the strictest pandemic measures in the world, the country's top authorities have ordered harsh containment measures.

Some videos showed local officials in Xi'an welding shut the door of a man suspected of being exposed to the virus are circulation on social media. Universal COVID testings are done throughout the cities, a huge vaccine booster program we launched offering shots to anyone over three years old, and home visits are done.

China has also reportedly set up “quarantine camps” with at least 20 million people are in restrictive lockdowns. A video posted to Twitter shows rows of small white cubicles lined up within what appears to be a sports stadium with staff fully covered in white protective clothing standing near.

According to CBS News on Wednesday, another footage showing just a bare-framed bed and small bathroom is claimed to be recorded from within one of the cell-like temporary buildings. Another viral clip shows staff leaving trays of food on shelves outside the units.

Some experts believe the authoritarian country is pulling these measures to realize a COVID-free Olympics to impress the world, although it might have been proven to be difficult to pull off. It is also to be noted that China has been applying its draconian “dynamic zero-case policy” that immediately shut down whole cities after even minor outbreaks nevertheless.
