JAKARTADAILY.ID – After an arduous 32-year wait, the Indonesian U-22 National Team has etched their names in history by capturing the gold medal in the football tournament at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games.
The confirmation came after the national team triumphed over Thailand with an impressive 5-2 scoreline in the final showdown held at the Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
Expressing his gratitude, Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), remarked on the fulfillment of a decades-long aspiration for gold that had eluded the nation for the past 32 years.
"Alhamdulillah, today we have realized our 32-year-long wait to witness the Indonesian football team emerge as champions. I extend my thanks to all the players, coaches, and officials. We dedicate this gold to the entire Indonesian population," said Erick following the final match.
Erick conveyed his appreciation for the unwavering commitment, tireless efforts, and sacrifices made by the U-22 national team throughout their journey.
From players to coaches, as well as staff and officials, he regarded this accomplishment as a testament to Indonesia's resilience as a nation, capable of working collectively towards a shared goal.
"Today, these Indonesian youngsters, who are predominantly under the age of 22, have proven that we are a resilient nation, hardworking and capable of collaborating to achieve excellence," added Erick.
After the match, Erick promptly informed President Jokowi about the victory. He expressed his gratitude to President Jokowi for providing unwavering support to the national team from the very beginning.
"I would like to thank President Jokowi. Since the outset, he has been resolute in driving Indonesian football to reach new heights. Alhamdulillah, our mission and the long-awaited championship have finally become a reality today," exclaimed Erick.
Erick admitted to being moved by witnessing the players' unwavering spirit and indomitable efforts throughout the match. He emphasized that the Indonesian nation had been filled with pride by the team's relentless struggle, unwavering sacrifices, and mental fortitude, displayed until the final whistle.
